Whenever the web server displays a page to the visitor the page and all its elements must be retrieved. The retrieval of every one of these items is counted and is called a 'hit'.

Hits are an indication of how much traffic you are getting to your site, but only tell you the number of times an object has been viewed. They do not tell you the number of visitors to your site.
